He-Man secret files #4: Greetings from Trolla!

With some spare time in my hands, getting the blog updated seemed the right thing to do.
He-Fan are really appreciating the never revelead designs I'm posting here, so I feel so bad to not give them more and more often.
So here I am, hopefully I will post something new once a week, for the next month (but no promises!).

Those two designs had been created specifically for their brief cameo in MVCreations' Masters OF the Universe Vol. 3 #8, the last one on which I also plenned the plot, and beautifully illustrated by Fabio Laguna.
As usual the challenge was to redesign two classic characters, stayign true to their orivial appearances and personality, but making them fit in the new line (so basically: what would Eric Tredaway do with them?).
I was pretty satisfied with the results: Dree-Elle has that exotic flavor to her while our beloved uncle Montork has become more like trollan version of Gandalf, which to me it's really fitting :-D

From sketch to colors #1

Just something to keep you guys interested in this "updated-once-a-year" blog...

This a piece I did for Wizard magazine, and it appearead even before first issue of the comic by MVCreations was published.
Mattel really liked the piece but it was printed really small on the magazine.

I thought it was nice to give it some justice posting a step by step progress, from the montage of sketches to the pencils, the final inks and the awesome colors by Val Staples!

Of course, keep in mind this is an early piece, so there are lots of bad things in my anatomy and style, but I thought it was fun piece to share.

He-Man secret files #2: Might Bite!

I had to update this damn things!
I'm sure no one is looking at this page anymore, so I need to bump it with somethign unexpected!
I love designing new MOTU characters...
I designed many for the MOTU comic book but never get chance to draw them on sequential pages.
And since chances of them being ever produced in toy or staction form are next to zero and don't think it hurts to share a few of them with the fan.
I did this a few days ago just for fun and being Val much better then me with MOTU names, named this ferociuos Horde commander: Might Bite!

This time it's a litte jump in the past: a small Transfromers Armada cover for a book I did probbly 3 years ago for MVCreations.
This isn't the only work I did for TF Armada. I will post something else and you may found somethign familiar...

He-Man secret files #1: Attack Trak redesign

Here we are! The stuff everyone was waiting for!
Lets put the new art on the side for a moment and focus back on He-Man: with this post I will start posting some of the designs I did during my run on the MOTU comic for MVCreations.
The first one is a redesign for the Attack Trak. I did it just for fun, but since we decided to show it in the Power of Fear book, I refined it abit more.

Eccoci qui! Le cose che tutti stavano aspettando!
Mettiamo da parte i nuovi disegni per un po' e riportiamo l'attenzione su He-Man: con questo post inizierò a mostrare alcuni dei design che ho fatto durante il mio lavoro al fumetto dei MOTU per la MVCreations.
Il primo è un redesign per l'Attack Trak. Lo feci solo per divertimenti, ma poi, avendo deciso di mostrarlo nell'albo "Power of Fear, l'ho rifinito un po' di più.

New Art #2: Wonder Woman

The big probelm I encountered seekign work during these years, is that I never had chance to draw superheroes professionally. So i didn't have any superheroes page in my portfolio.
And superheroes publisher want to see superheroes, if they see He-Man, they think you can draw Conan, if they see Snake Eyes they think you're good only for Punisher.
So I still have to show I can draw superheroes, but if no one give me a job on a superhero book, I won't have lot of chances to draw superheroes sequentials.
Well, luckily that also means I have enought work keeping me busy! :-)

But back on the pin up, if I have to show I can draw superheroes, I would start from the prototypes, so my second one was a Wonder Woman.
I wasn't really satysfied with her actually, it was a very small drawing, so I did another one that I like much more!

Il grosso problema che ho incontrato cercando lavoro durante questi anni è, che non avevo mai avuto occasione di disegnare professionalmente supereroi. Ovvero, non avevo tavole con supereroi nel mio portfolio.
E le case editrici di supereroi volgiono vedere pagine con supereroi, se vedono He-Man pensano che tu possa andar bene per Conan, se vedono Snake Eyes, pensano che tu possa andar bene al massimo per il Punitore.
Dunque devo ancora far vedere che sono perfettamente in grado di disegnare anche supereroi, ma se nessuno mi da un lavoro su un albo di supereroi, non avrò molta possibilità di disegnare questo tipo di tavole.
Beh, per fortuna questo significa anche che ho abbastanza lavoro da tenermi impegnato! :-)

Ma tornando alle pin-up, se devo dismostrare che posso disegnare supereroi, parto dai prototipi: la seconda infatti sarebbe stata Wonder Woman.
Non ero particolarmente soddisfatto con il risultato, ma si trattava anche di un disengo molto piccolo, percui ne ho fatto un altro che mi piace molto di più!

New Art #1: Superman

A few weeks ago I started experimenting with a new style.
Being a little tired of my over detailed current style I just wanted to try something fresh and quick.
I also wanted to ink: I love inking with brushes so I was looking for a style that could allow me to refine a page with inks in almost the same time of the super refined pencils I did on MOTU or G.I.Joe.
I also wanted to color my onw stuff, at least from time to time, so I can start learning coloring.. that eventually lead to a job for Upper Deck, but I will talk about that later.

I did a few little pin-ups to practice this new style.
They hardly have any chance to see the light, so I thought publishing them here was just the right thing to do :-)
This is the very first one.

Alcune settimane fa ho cominciato a sperimentare con un nuovo stile di disegno
Essendo un po' stanco del mio attuale stile super dettagliato, volevo provare qualcosa di fresco e veloce.
Volevo anche inchiostrare: adore inchiostrare con i pennelli, quindi cercavo uno stile che mi permettesse di rifinire una pagina a china quasi nelle stesso tempo che ci metto a fare una pagina molto rifinita a matita per i MOTU o per G.I.Joe.
Volevo anche provare a colorare le mie cose, almeno di tanto in tanto, in modo da imparare anche a colorare.
Questo ha poi portato ad un lavoro per la Upper Deck, ma di quesot parlerò in seguito.

Ho fatto alcune piccole pin-up per far pratica con questo nuovo stile.
Avrebbero ben poche chance di vedere mai la luce, ho pensato che pubblicarle qui sarebbem stata la cosa migliore :-)
Questa è la prima in assoluto che ho fatto.

Riassunto veloce / Quick recap

OK, non guarderò davvero tanto al passato, ma dato che il lavoro con i DVD è ancora la mia maggiore attività, farò un riassunto veloce del lavoro svolto fino ad ora!

Per tutti i set ho realizzato le illustrazioni e la grafica insieme a Val Staples, David Levine e Alessandra Fucarino
Io e Val abbiamo progettato i menu e ovviamente insieme a James Eatock e Adam Tayner abbiamo fatto da consulenti per l'intero progetto

Il primo set realizzato era la collezione dei 10 migliori episodi, presentato alla convention di San Diego la scorsa estate.

Okay, I'm not really going to look back too much, but since the DVD work is still my major activity right now, I'll give a quick recap of the work done so far!

I created the illustrations and the graphic for all the sets packaging, along with Val Staples, David Levine and Alessandra Fucarino.
Me and Val also worked on the intercative menus designs and, with James Eatock and Adam Tyner we also worked as consultant for the entire project.

The first set released the past summer was the 10 best episode collection launched at the San Diego Comic Con in July.

Multilanguage

The most difficult things for me is goign to be keeping this thing updated in two languages: Italian and English
Anyway, I'll post in blue for English and red for Italian.
Maybe I won't post in both languages all the time, but I'll try do so as often as possible.

Hi everyone!
Yeah, I gave up and finally decided to open my onw blog!
Probably too much time in my hand right now, but things will change when I'll be back to work full steam on the Masters of the Universe and Princess of Power DVD.
To be completely honest what finally made me decide to open a blog was tonight mail exachange with my good pal James Eatock aka Busta Toons who had recently published his own MOTU related blog.

Well, having worked all the past hours a the graphic I will reserve the classic introduction to me and my work for tomorrow (maybe)
For today I will just celebrate the great news of She-Ra finally coming on DVD by BCI and the usual he-man.org gang! This is going to be a great time for everyone involved again!

Probabilemento ho solo troppo tempo libero in questo momento, ma presto le cose cambieranno quando tornerò a lavorare a pieno ritmo sui DVD dei Masters of the Univer e di Princess of Power.
Ad essere sinceri, quello che mi ha fatto infine decidere di aprire un blog è stato lo scambio di e-mail che ho avuto stasera con il mio buon amico James Eatock, alias Busta Toons, che ha recentemente aperto il suo blog su He-Man.
